Patrick Han, Coho/US Board member, was approached by The Henry George School of Social Science in New York City to lead a seminar on cohousing Jan 28th. Patrick muses, “although there are no cohousing communities in NY City yet, the ‘word’ is being brought to the heathens.” More on the session “Building Vibrant Communities – The Cohousing Experience” below. Patrick lives in Greenwich Village, and is leading a group looking to create the first cohousing community in New York City.

Building Vibrant Communities – The Cohousing Experience

Cohousing combines the benefits of private housing within communities rich in public facilities such as playgrounds, parks, and a “common house”. Cohousing is planned, owned and managed by the residents. Shared facilities are maintained by the residents, and in the process they build trust, friendships, and a sense of mutual support. Patrick Han outlines the rationale for cohousing, its history, and charts the future of these innovative communities.

Patrick B Han received his architectural education at the Rhode Island School of Design. He is an award-winning registered architect, and principal of a design-build and development company.

The search for a sustainable urban living model led Patrick to Cohousing. This in turn resulted in the founding of Cohousing Community Workshop, a development company whose goal is to develop urban Cohousing communities. He also serves as Vice President of the board for The Cohousing Association of the United States, a not-for-profit national organization and is a certified senior Cohousing group facilitator.

Community development work is central to Patrickʼs life. He is an active volunteer, traveling to developing countries to provide expertise in design and construction to communities in need. In the city, he is also involved in creating sustainable economies in low-income neighborhoods.

Patrick lives in Greenwich Village with his wife and son, and they belong to a group looking to create the first cohousing community in the city.
